Can someone explain it in simple terms? What are the benefits? Is there a down side to using it? Fran wrote: Hi. The biggest deal with Silent mode 1 is that the camera uses electronic shutter for the first curtain instead of using its mechanical shutter. The second curtain still works as usual though. What this means is a lot less vibration. If you are shooting on a tripod, with a long lens, and a remote controlled shutter or timer -- then you might wan to consider using Silent mode 1 with live view instead of shooting the usual way.
Doing so gives you the absolute minimum vibration and as a result almost no camera shake this camera is capable of. The vibration only begins when the second curtain is starting to close. As a matter of fact, with silent mode 1, there are absolutely no moving parts active inside the camera if you pre-focus until the second curtain is about to drop.
Although I do not think it every explicitly states it, I believe this only applies to shots taken in live mode view. Certainly putting it on hi speed continuous and slient shooting mode 2 in live mode only allows one shot to be taken even if you hold down the shutter button. Yes, the camera is set for continious shooting but the silent mode 2 is supposed to disable this. I have also tried all modes with single shooting mode and still find no difference. Thanks javam, that sounds like it might be the answer.
As you say, this is not stated in the manual. Last modified by canonfan46 on 23 Jul PM. Yes javam, I have had that confirmed MrDennis Plus.
